Program Overview What is electrical apprenticeship?
IEC of the Bluegrass offers a U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship Program designed to prepare individuals for successful careers in the electrical industry.
The four-year program combines paid on-the-job training with structured classroom instruction. Apprentices work full-time while attending classes that cover electrical theory, blueprint reading, National Electrical Code requirements, safety practices, conduit bending, motor controls, transformers, and other essential industry skills.
Each year, apprentices complete approximately 2,000 hours of on-the-job training and 144 hours of classroom instruction, allowing them to apply what they learn in the classroom directly in the field. This combination of hands-on experience and technical education helps apprentices build the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to succeed in the trade.
Upon successful completion of the program, apprentices earn nationally recognized credentials and are prepared to advance their careers as skilled electrical professionals.
How to get Started Beginning a career in the electrical industry is simple
Step 1: Apply with IEC of the Bluegrass
Call 859-266-4968 to schedule an appointment. During your appointment, you will complete a job application and take a 65 question pre-screening aptitude assessment designed to evaluate reading comprehension, basic algebra, and geometry skills. Please bring a valid photo ID and current resume (recommended but not required).
Step 2: Complete the Screening Process
Applicants who successfully complete the application and assessment process will have their information shared with IEC of the Bluegrass contractor members who are actively seeking apprentices and entry-level employees.
Step 3: Contact Potential Employers
Applicants are encouraged to reach out directly to the contractor members they are interested in working for. Contact the companies, inquire about employment opportunities, and schedule interviews when positions are available.
Step 4: Get Hired
The goal of the IEC apprenticeship program is to connect qualified applicants with IEC of the Bluegrass contractor members. Once hired by a participating contractor, you will begin earning wages and accumulating on-the-job training hours while working in the electrical trade.
Step 5: Begin Apprenticeship Training
After being hired by an IEC of the Bluegrass contractor member, you may be enrolled in the IEC of the Bluegrass U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship Program. In most cases, your employer will cover the cost of your apprenticeship tuition and training.
