Licensing & Testing Information

Anyone who will perform nonexempt electrical work without supervision by a licensed electrician or master electrician DOES require a license.

Requirements for the Electrical Licensing Exam, Application & Renewal:

Electrical Contractors - When contracting with the public to perform electrical work an electrical contractor license is required. Only licensed electrical contractors may request electrical permits.

Master Electricians - All electrical contractors must employ at least one master electrician. Master electricians are responsible for all electrical work performed under their supervision.

Electricians - All electrical work must be performed by, or under the supervision of, a licensed electrician or master electrician. In order to work unsupervised, an electrical worker must be a licensed electrician.

Reciprical License Applications - Kentucky has reciprical licenses for Ohio and Virginia

Electrical Contractor

Testing Information:
Title: Business & Law (Electrical Contractor)
Cost: $80.00
Testing Information: Approved Materials and Testing Topics
Testing Locations: Find a testing center in the state of Kentucky
Registering: Computer-based certification examinations are administered by ProV, a professional test administration company. To register to take a ProV computer base exam call  1-866-720-7768. ProV scheduling staff is available 8 AM through 6 PM EST, Monday through Friday.

License Requirements:

  • Proof of passing test results
  • Certificate of Liability Insurance (minimum of $500,000 general liability)
  • Workers' Compensation or notarized waiver
  • Completed Application (click here to download)
  • Application Fee (prorated contact DBHC for fee schedule)
  • Color photo of applicant

Renewal Requirements:

  • Completed Renewal Form (click here to download)
  • $200 renewal fee
  • Certificate of Liability Insurance (minimum of $500,000 general liability)
  • Workers' Compensation or notarized waiver
  • Designated Master Electrician listed
  • proof of the six (6) hours continuing education 


Penalties:

  • The reinstatement fee for any lapsed license pursuant to KRS 227A.100(4) shall be equal to the license renewal fee ($200) and shall be paid in addition to the license renewal fee.
  • In addition, the late renewal fee shall be $50. If all documents required to be submitted for renewal are postmarked on or before the last day of the renewal month, the filing shall be considered timely and no late fee shall be assessed.

Master Electrician

Testing Requirements:
Title: Standard Master Electrician
Cost: $80.00
Testing Information: Approved Materials and Testing Topics
Testing Locations: Find a testing center in the state of Kentucky
Registering: Computer-based certification examinations are administered by ProV a professional test administration company. To register to take the computer-based certification exam, call ProV at 1-866-720-7768. ProV's customer care reservations and customer service lines are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (Eastern Time).

License Requirements:

  • Proof of passing test results
  • Notarized proof of eight (8) years experience (either six (6) years of work experience and completion of an approved training agency program with at least 576 hours of classroom training or an additional two (2) years of work experience)

Renewal Requirements:

  • $100 renewal fee
  • proof of the six (6) hours continuing education
